Capturing their Love Story

Capturing an engagement session at the Chicago Cultural Center was truly amazing. As a couples photographer, I aim to make sessions feel like a date night. The beauty of the Cultural Center made it easy for Zach and Paloma to immerse themselves in the moment, enjoying each other’s company while admiring the stunning architecture.

Outfits are everything, especially at a stunning venue like the Chicago Cultural Center! Zach and Paloma arrived dressed for the occasion, which helped create the "luxury-effect" of the shoot. We explored Preston Bradley Hall, taking photos under the Tiffany glass dome, the largest of its kind. The natural light filtering through the glass added a soft, warm effect. Moving through the hallways, we found artistic opportunities in the staircases and murals. The couple’s sweet interactions, combined with the setting, resulted in a strong set of engagement photos.

What you Need to Know as a Photographer

If you’re planning a shoot at the Chicago Cultural Center, keep these tips in mind:

  • No Permit Needed: You don't need to obtain a permit to shoot at the Chicago Cultural Center, but if you plan on taking your shoot somewhere else in Chicago, you likely will!
  • Scout the Location: Each floor of the Cultural Center has a different vibe with different architecture. The third floor is where a lot of weddings are held and has the amazing mosaic dome. The first floor has a majestic marble staircase that was incredible for portraits and close-ups. It was helpful to scout the location well in advance to plan for lighting and how I led the session.
  • Choose the Right Time: Weekdays and mornings from 10:00am - 11:00am are less crowded, giving you more space to work.
  • Using a Flash is Forbidden: Because the Cultural Center is open to the public, they ask that you do not utilize flash. Use natural light to your advantage! The large windows and stained glass dome provide great lighting in certain locations.
  • Dress for the Setting: Suggest elegant attire that complements the venue. Your client's clothing choice can change the entire vibe of the shoot at a location like this!
  • Bring the Right Lenses: A wide-angle lens helps capture the architecture, while having a prime lens with me was amazing for portraits.
  • Public Location Tips: The Cultural Center is a public space. Having a session here took about 1.5 times longer than usually because we waited for people to move from certain locations since it is fairly busy. Be mindful of visitors and avoid blocking pathways.
  • Read the Photography Policy: Their photography policy is fairly standard, but it's helpful to read beforehand just in case. Access it here.
